Jordanian security forces arrested three wounded men on Monday morning in connection with a deadly shooting at a Greek Orthodox church in Karak. The suspects were taken into custody after a dawn shootout in the governorate south of Amman. No members of the security forces were injured during the operation.
The attack occurred on Friday during a funeral service in the village of Hammoud. Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya confirmed that the three men identified by security services were responsible for the incident. He told state TV Al-Mamlaka that the group put up fierce resistance before being subdued. Al-Faraya stated that the security services employed all available means to apprehend the individuals, who sustained severe injuries during the arrest.
The Public Security Directorate declared that the three had met their just fate. The directorate noted that terrorism has no place among the local population. It did not name the suspects or link them to any specific Islamist militant groups. No claim of responsibility had emerged prior to the arrests.
Karak is home to a minority Christian population. King Abdullah II directed authorities to respond with an iron fist against outlaws and those attempting to undermine national unity. The monarch characterized the attackers as outlaws of Islam. The arrests mark the first official confirmation of the suspects' identities since the Friday shooting.
