JetBlue Airways reported a net loss of $257 million for the quarter that ended on September 30, a figure that widened the company's deficit compared to the same period last year.

The carrier has been working to stabilize its financial position after shares dropped to a new low on Monday before rebounding by approximately 11% in after-hours trading. The loss represents a sharp increase from the $143 million deficit recorded in the prior year's third quarter. The primary driver of the expanded loss was a 61% jump in fuel bills, which reached $868 million for the three-month period.

Executives pointed to strong customer behavior as a counterbalance to the rising input costs. Average fares climbed more than 19% to $245.11, up from $205.67 in the year-earlier period. CEO Joanna Geraghty stated in an earnings release that resilient demand and strong yields drove revenue ahead of initial expectations. She noted that the company recaptured a larger portion of the fuel cost increase than previously projected. Geraghty added that this momentum has continued into the fourth quarter, with the Fort Lauderdale hub delivering strong results even as the airline expands capacity.

The company's financial metrics missed some analyst expectations while meeting others. LSEG data shows the adjusted loss per share came in at 60 cents, exceeding the 55-cent loss anticipated by Wall Street. Revenue totaled $2.81 billion, slightly below the $2.82 billion projected by analysts. JetBlue had not posted an annual profit since 2019, a fact that underscores the length of the current turnaround effort.

The carrier's balance sheet reflects the strain of the multiyear restructuring plan. Total debt stood at $8.4 billion as of September 30. The company ended the quarter with $2.2 billion in liquidity. Its unencumbered asset base is valued at $7 billion, a figure that includes $2.8 billion in aircraft and engines. CFO Ursula Hurley said in a statement that the company has the liquidity and financing options to bridge to at least $1 in earnings per share and positive free cash flow by 2028. She emphasized a focus on disciplined cost execution and capital management.

JetBlue executives are scheduled to hold an earnings call at 10 a.m. ET on Tuesday. Analysts are expected to press the leadership team on the company's long-term health and the pace of its return to profitability. A group of senior creditors is reportedly working with restructuring adviser PJT Partners, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal on Friday. The airline faces ongoing challenges from higher industry-wide fuel costs and competition from larger rivals. A proposed acquisition of Spirit Airlines was blocked by a federal judge on anticompetitive grounds, and a regional partnership with American Airlines was also blocked by a court ruling. JetBlue currently maintains a partnership with United Airlines.

The airline is investing in premium offerings to boost revenue, including a new domestic first class section that recently went on sale. Despite higher fares, which have increased more than 20% this year, the carrier says travel demand has remained strong. The company continues to cut costs and adjust its network as part of its broader turnaround strategy.
